Lighting and extinguishing fires
Although the Scottish Outdoor Access Code states that you are allowed to light fires on the inter-tidal foreshore, this part of the beach is part of Donmouth Nature Reserve, and firelighting is prohibited here. Fires can be lit on the main part of Aberdeen beach, to the south.
It is always safer to use a camping stove if you are planning to cook food outside. If you do light a fire, always extinguish it using water from the sea - don't just cover it with sand, as the sand will get hot and could burn both dog paws and bare feet.
Remember to take all of your litter home with you.

At low tide it's possible to walk along the shore to the beach, but be careful not to get cut off when the tide is high.
Check the tides before you visit:

At low tide this is a great area to try beachcombing. What will you find?

Cormorants need to dry their wings after being in the water as their feathers are not waterproof. You may see them standing with their wings outstretched on the shoreline.
Please don't allow your dog to frighten or chase seabirds.

Cross the road and follow the path here for a good view of seals hauled out on an island, and head on to the Brig o' Balgownie (Walk 3).
Please note, this path has a fallen tree, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs and most buggies.

It's possible to walk for 15 km north along the beach until you reach the River Ythan at Newburgh (a great place to see many seals). Along the route you will pass the sand dunes at Balmedie, and the remains of many WWII defensive pillboxes.

Keep an eye out for harbour seals swimming up the river.
Harbour (or common) seals are one of two species of seals native to the UK. They can grow to lengths of 2m and dive to depths of around 450m, remaining underwater for up to 30 minutes at a time.
Seals will often do a 'banana pose' while resting on land and can also be seen 'bottling' - floating with their head poking out of the water while they rest in the sea.

Keep an eye out for short-eared owls patrolling the grassland on the south side of the road from the reserve. Short-eared owls are resident to the UK, although they are joined by main migrant birds from Russia, Scandinavia and Iceland in the winter months.
They are named after the small tufts of feathers that adorn their head. These tufts are not always visible and are instead raised when the bird feels threatened. Unlike many other species of owl, short-eared owls are crepuscular, meaning that they can be spotted hunting at dawn and dusk. They are also one of the most active UK owls during the day, and can be spotted hunting then too.
The fenced-off square in this location is a breeding bird site for wading birds. It also attracts many small mammals, on which the owls feed.

Keep an eye out for the different species of insect that call Donmouth Nature Reserve home. Several species of bumblebee, as well as common blue and peacock butterflies can often be spotted flitting around the reserve’s wildflowers.
Common blue butterfly (Polyommatus icarus)
The genus name of the common blue (Polyommatus) translates as ‘adorned with many eyes’, in reference to the eye-like markings that decorate the underside of their wings. These patterns are distinctive and allow you to distinguish the common blue from closely related species, notably the northern brown argus butterfly.
Common blue caterpillars produce honeydew – a sugary substance that ants find irresistible. Certain ant species will collect the butterfly’s caterpillars and stash them deep within their nests. This benefits both parties as the ants provide the caterpillar with protection and in reward, they receive a sugary reward.
Peacock butterfly (Aglais io)
These colourful butterflies hibernate during the winter months and are one of the first species that can be spotted on the wing during the spring.
Their large and distinctive eyespots are used to deter predators as they resemble the eyes of a large bird of prey (with the butterfly’s angled body posing as the bird’s beak). If the eyespots fail to deter a potential attacker, the butterfly can produce a loud rasping sound by forcing air out of its body.
A single female peacock butterfly can lay up top 500 eggs. Upon hatching, the caterpillars (which feed on plants such as stinging nettle) spin a communal web to shelter themselves from predators.

Keep an eye out for common lizards sunning themselves on the edges of the wooden boardwalk in the summer months.
Like many other lizard species, common lizards can detach their tails as a defence mechanism. Once the tail has been dropped, it will continue to move and wriggle to distract any potential predators, allowing the lizard to make a quick escape.
These small reptiles are also known as viviparous lizards, meaning they give birth to live young. Eggs are incubated internally and the young lizards hatch inside their mother before she gives birth.
Common lizards are protected in the UK under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act, meaning it is an offence to deliberately injure, kill or sell these animals in the UK.

Sand martins are small birds, with wingspans of around 29cm. The visit the reserve from March until October and can typically be spotted in the summer months.
Belonging to the same family as swallows (Hirundinidae), they can reach speeds of 50km/h.
Sand martins (as their name suggests) nest within tunnels dug into the faces of sandbanks. Their tunnels can reach depths of 3-4 feet. At the end of the tunnel, they lay a clutch of around 4 to 5 eggs.
Their species name (riparia) is derived from the Latin word ‘ripa’, meaning ‘of the riverbank’. This refers to their tendency to nest in sandy areas around bodies of water.

This tour offers two walks, one on either side of the River Don through Donmouth Nature Reserve.
The red walk leads down the south side of the river to the beach, along a boardwalk and onto the sandy beach at Donmouth. The boardwalk is suitable for wheelchairs. There are many benches along the Esplanade.
The blue walk heads across the Bridge of Don and along Donmouth Road where there are a number of sandy tracks that lead to the shore. There is also a boardwalk on this side, although there are steps, making it less accessible for wheelchairs and those with mobility challenges. There are no benches on this side of the river.
This area is host to a large amount of wildlife, including short-eared owls hunting in the fields opposite; ducks and seabirds visible from the birdhide behind you; seals playing in the tide or heading upstream to their haul-out spot beyond the Bridge of Don; and even lizards warming themselves in the sun on the boardwalk.

Unfortunately litter is widely found at the beach. Plastic has been found in the stomachs of almost all marine species and an estimated 100,000 marine animals, including seals, die each year from plastic entanglement.
Please take all your litter home with you, and consider picking up some of what you find at the beach, of course being careful of sharp objects.
If everyone did something small, it would add up to something big!

Unfortunately there can be litter at the beach, some of it sharp. Take care, especially when barefoot!
Everyone can do their bit to help clean up the beach. Remember to take all of your litter home with you, and consider picking up some of the litter that you weren't responsible for.
