The Walled Garden
A series of 3 sheltered and interconnected gardens that were originally used to grow vegetable and fruit.
You can walk though the gardens and join the path back down to the main part of Seaton Park.

Where else can I walk?
1. Walk upstream along the river bank to Archimedes Screw, a micro hydro scheme operated by Aberdeen Community Energy (ACE). The development was funded by the Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES). The screw is the first urban hydroelectric station in Scotland, Aberdeen’s first community hydro initiative and also the UK’s widest Archimedean screw turbine.
The Archimedes screw turbine is located on the former site of the Donside Papermill, which was demolished in 2006. A lade cutting across a bend in the river supplies water to the turbine, which has the potential to generate 400 kW.
The screw began producing electricity in 2016. Generated electricity is sold to the National Grid through a power purchase agreement. Income generated from the project is channelled into initiatives that will achieve social and environmental benefits for the local regeneration area.
2. Continue walking up the river to Grandholm Bridge.This bridge was built as a crossing over the Don in 1891. It was built on the site of a ferry crossing that existed to serve the needs of the proprietors and residents of Persley Estate.

Campfires and portable BBQs scorch the earth and can lead to wildfires. If you want to cook outside it's safest to use a camping stove.
As well as being unpleasant to look at, litter poses a risk to both wildlife and dogs. Please pick up your rubbish and either put it in a bin or take it home with you.

Follow this route along the River Don, visiting the Hay Memorial Fountain and the woodland walk en route to the old settlement of Balgownie. Turn left to visit the Brig o' Balgownie, Scotland's oldest bridge, or right to walk past the University of Aberdeen's Hillhead Student Village and then back into Seaton Park to visit the Walled Garden.

There are steps up to the Walled Garden, and the woodland walk can be muddy. There are many benches by the river.

If you head up this relatively steep path on the left you will pass the Tillydrone Mote Hill, a small conical mound that was originally used for burials 4000 years ago in the Bronze Age.
Continue along the path to the Wallace Tower, which is being converted into a cafe. The Wallace Tower was orginally sited at St Nicholas Street but when Marks and Spencer built their large store in the 1960s, they paid to move this structure brick by brick to its current location.

Leave the walled garden here and turn left to walk down the relatively steep paved path back to the main entrance to Seaton Park.

The Brig o'Balgownie is Scotland's oldest bridge and offers lovely views over the River Don. From here you can walk down either side of the river to the Bridge of Don, but be aware that both paths have obstacles in the form of steps and a fallen tree. (Walk 3)

The Brig o'Balgownie is Scotland's oldest bridge and offers lovely views over the River Don. From here you can walk down either side of the river to the Bridge of Don, but be aware that both paths have obstacles in the form of steps and a fallen tree.

The path can be beautiful in the autumn colours, but also may be slippy with mud and fallen leaves.

There are lots of birds to spot on the river, and you might even be lucky enough to spot an otter!
